THE DEFINING WORK IN NEUROSURGERY, REISSUED FOR A NEW GENERATION OF TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE
Cranial Anatomy and Surgical Approaches is the master work of the legendary neurosurgeon Albert L. Rhoton, Jr. -- a distillation of 40 years of work to improve safety, accuracy, and gentleness in the medical specialty the author helped shape.
Newly reissued and featuring more than 2000 full-color illustrations, this definitive text on the microsurgical anatomy of the brain remains an essential tool for the education and enrichment of neurosurgeons at any career stage. It fulfils its author's hopes to make, in his words, the "delicate, fateful, and awesome" procedures of neurosurgery more gentle, accurate, and safe.
Across three sections, Cranial Anatomy and Surgical Approaches details the safest approaches to brain surgery, including:
 Micro-operative techniques and instrument selection
Microsurgical anatomy and approaches to the supratentorial area and anterior cranial base, including chapters on aneurysms, the lateral and third ventricles, cavernous sinus and sella.
Anatomy and approaches to the posterior cranial fossa and posterior cranial base, including chapters on the fourth ventricle, tentorial incisura, foramen magnum, temporal bone, and jugular foramen
Supra- and infratentorial areas, including chapters on the cerebrum and cerebellum and their arteries and veins
Editorial Reviews
Review
"Overall, I think the neurosurgical community should be grateful to Dr Rhoton for offering us a cream of surgical neuroanatomy knowledge in one book. The book is full of astonishing dissections of all aspects of human cranium. It looks like this work is not repeatable; therefore, it is unique. This book is for all of us, from junior residents to most experienced neurosurgeons as well as any neuroscientists, such as neurologists, neuroradiologists, and neuroanatomists. Dr Rhoton's book is on a par with the likes of Vesalius' work and only a few other publications. These books are in a league of their own. It is already an idol in the pantheon of neurosciences books." -- U?ur Tre, MD, Department of Neurosurgery, Yeditepe University School of Medicine
"The photographs, the text, and the illustrations describing the accompanying surgical approaches are easy to follow and understand. This is an outstanding resource for those training in neurosurgery." -- Fady Charbel, MD, Doody's Reviews

ALBERT L. RHOTON, JR., MD (1932-2016), was a pioneer in the field of microsurgical neuroanatomy. Along with more than four decades of practice and research at the Mayo Clinic and the University of Florida, he served as President of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the Society of Neurological Surgeons, the North American Skull Base Society, the International Interdisciplinary Congress on Craniofacial and Skull Base Surgery, the Florida Neurosurgical Society, and the International Society for Neurosurgical Technology and Instrument Invention. Dr. Rhoton was a graduate of the Washington University School of Medicine, graduating with the highest academic standing in the class of 1959. He completed his neurosurgical training at Washington University and joined the staff of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota in 1965. He became Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Florida in 1972. Cranial Anatomy and Surgical Approaches, considered his magnum opus, was first published in 2003.
