Description
This is the 12th edition of the renowned and comprehensive Manual of Clinical Microbiology. The previous edition was published in 2015.
Purpose
The purpose is to update the authoritative (and comprehensive) reference for clinical microbiology. This very worthy objective is spectacularly met by this edition.
Audience
The book is intended for anyone involved in clinical microbiology ― spanning students in training to experienced practitioners, and directly applicable (at a minimum) to the medical specialties of laboratory medicine, clinical microbiology, clinical laboratory science, public health microbiology, infectious diseases, epidemiology, and infection prevention. It would be very useful to researchers (basic, translational) to understand clinical microbiology from the practice point of view. This book definitely meets the needs of the intended audience. The authors and contributors are internationally renowned for their expertise ― truly a dream team for clinical microbiology and an all-star cast of clinical microbiologists.
Features
This is simply a fabulous book and update. I cannot wax enthusiastic enough, and there are too few superlatives in the English language to do justice to this book. It has always been the go-to for clinical microbiology, and this edition carries on this tradition of excellence. A few new chapters have been added, with the chapter on laboratory accreditation and compliance a welcome (and much-needed) addition. (Note: This 10-page chapter is a superb introduction to a complicated area; truly interested readers should avail themselves of the 1,000-plus page reference, Clinical Laboratory Management, 2nd edition, Garcia, American Society for Microbiology Press, 2014).)
Assessment
As the authors ruefully acknowledge, this is a time of tremendous change in clinical microbiology with the explosion of molecular technology applications. Due to editing and publication deadlines, some of the material (including taxonomy) may have already changed. Nonetheless, this is a fantastic, comprehensive, and contemporary snapshot of clinical microbiology today. Get it.
